History of Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC

Fort Bragg is the largest military base in the world with over 50,000 personnel. Located in North Carolina, the base is named for Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War. The base is home to the Special Operations Command that oversees the Special Forces and Army Rangers. In addition to an army base, Fort Bragg maintains two airfields that serve globally and in special operations and airborne forces on-base.

Originally founded as Camp Bragg in 1918 as an artillery training ground, the base quickly grew with the addition of Pope Field in 1919. The original plan was to station six brigades but, following the end of World War I, the base faced demobilization.

It was nearly closed for good in August 1921 but, thanks to the efforts of General Albert J. Bowley, the camp's commander, the closing order was cancelled just a month later. On September 30, 1922, the base became a permanent Army post and took the name Fort Bragg.

During World War II, Fort Bragg's population grew from 5,400 to a peak of 159,000. Shortly after World War II, the 82nd Airborne Division found a permanent home at Fort Bragg. Come 1951, the XVIII Airborne Corps, known for its rapid deployment, was reactivated due to the tension generated by the Cold War. Throughout the Cold War, hundreds of thousands of soldiers underwent basic training.

In 1990, the XCIII Airborne Corps and 82nd Airborne Division deployed to Saudi Arabia to take part in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Towards the end of the century, the base and its facilities underwent modernization. Devers Elementary School was opened for the children who lived on base and the wooden barracks were removed.

Fort Bragg keeps a watchful eye on areas around the world, ready to deploy at a moment's notice. The "Iron Mike" statue, dedicated to Airborne soldiers of past, present, and future, stands in memory of those who served and continue to serve to this day.

Bryan Honda is proud to serve the area right down the road from Fort Bragg and its military personnel. Be sure to stop in and see us!
